Victim’s parents disappointed as Sealdah Court sentences rapist to life, criticize CBI for handling

On Monday, Sealdah court sentenced Sanjay Ray to life imprisonment for the rape and murder of a young female doctor. Despite the gravity of the crime, the victim’s parents expressed strong disappointment with the verdict, as they had anticipated a death sentence. They specifically criticized the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for failing to prove the case as one of the rarest of rare, a legal requirement for the imposition of the death penalty.

The victim's father explained that the CBI's investigation did not meet the standards needed to present the case as extraordinarily brutal, which would justify the maximum punishment under Indian law. According to the father, the family's trust in the justice system was shaken, as they believed the crime's severity should have merited a death sentence. The parents reiterated their belief that the crime, which involved extreme violence, should have led to a harsher penalty, but the CBI's handling of the case prevented that from happening.

In addition to their disappointment with the verdict, the victim's parents raised concerns about the investigation process. They claimed that local political figures, including TMC leaders from their area, failed to provide the necessary support during crucial stages of the investigation. The victim’s father alleged that these leaders were involved in meetings that focused on erasing evidence rather than assisting with the case. He expressed frustration that, instead of helping, these figures hindered the investigation's progress.

The victim's family also highlighted their continued pursuit of justice through legal means. They had presented specific questions to the authorities regarding the investigation, which the court had directed the CBI to address. The parents are determined to ensure that the investigation is revisited and that their concerns are thoroughly investigated. They expect the CBI to respond to the queries raised and remain committed to pressing for further accountability in the case.
